The board of directors
Directors of the new clinic Medisch Centrum Kinderwens are dr. M.J. Crooij, MD.,PhD., gynaecologist specialised in fertility and dr. R.J. van Kooij, PhD, clinical embryologist. Almost all of the staff of the former fertility department will continue to work in the new clinic.
Fertility treatments
At our clinic we offer treatments with donor sperm , as well as fertility treatments such as IVF and ICSI. Besides heterosexual couples in which the man is infertile, we also treat lesbian couples.
The intake interview
During the intake interview we look at whether we can accept you for treatment. Sometimes additional fertility tests may be required. These tests can be carried out by your own gynaecologist. Depending on your age and medical history, one of the following treatment methods can be chosen:
I.U.I.-D (intrauterine insemination with donorsperm)
I.V.F.-D (in-vitro fertilisation with donorsperm)
The treatments
IVF and ICSI The goal of the Kinderwens Medical Centre is to provide assistance to people who want to
become parents, but for whom a “natural” pregnancy either is not possible or not possible anymore. There are different options available to try to achieve pregnancy.
In the following download, IVF and ICSI treatments are discussed. IVF and ICSI (File format: pdf. File size 62k)

I.U.I.-D is a form of insemination in which sperm cells are inserted directly into the uterine cavity. Insemination takes place around the time of ovulation. I.U.I. uses sperm that has been treated in our laboratory.
The time of ovulation is determined by means of urine tests, which you can perform yourself at home. Sometimes the decision may be made to support the I.U.I. treatment with drugs that stimulate the maturation of several oocytes . In such cases it is necessary to have ultrasound examinations conducted, either by us or by your own gynaecologist. We can determine the time of insemination on the basis of the results.
I.V.F.-D is only applied if indicated. One reason for this may be the failure to achieve pregnancy following a number of inseminations. IVF is also indicated if both fallopian tubes are blocked. The indications for IVF are laid down in the guidelines of the NVOG (Dutch Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology).
With IVF, hormone injections are used to bring a number of follicles to maturity. The oocytes are removed from the ovaries by means of a punction. Following fertilisation in the laboratory, a maximum of 2 fertilised oocytes (embryos) are transferred into the uterus. The stimulation phase, punction and embryo transfer during an I.V.F. treatment together take about 15 days. You will be monitored intensively by means of ultrasound examinations and blood tests for approximately 10 days. If we are treating you it is not possible to have the examinations and tests carried out in your own place of residence. Please be aware that you will have to stay in the vicinity of our clinic for 10 days. We will gladly assist you in finding a hotel or guesthouse.

Pregnancy
If you become pregnant following a treatment in our clinic we would like to know as soon as possible. We also ask that you keep us informed on the further development of your pregnancy and the birth of your child. This is important for our results as well as for registering the pregnancies for each donor. Figures on the success rates of the different treatments can be found elsewhere on this site.
Donors
Sperm donors volunteer because they are concerned about the problems surrounding unwanted childlessness. They do not receive any financial compensation for donating sperm. The donor undergoes an extensive examination for physical and mental disorders. However, this screening cannot completely rule out the possibility of the donor passing on a hereditary disease.
In addition, the donor’s blood and sperm are tested, mainly to detect AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Because a donor can only be confirmed as being AIDS-free following a second blood test after six months, his sperm is frozen until the results of the second test are known. These tests are repeated at least every six months. Thanks to these regular tests the chance of infection is extremely low, but cannot be ruled out completely.
If you have a donor yourself, we can treat you with his sperm. However, the sperm must be frozen by our clinic. This means that your donor will have to come to our clinic a number of times to donate sperm and have his blood tested. The sperm cannot be used until 7 months after the first donation at the earliest. According to Dutch law, ‘own’ donors are subject to the same rules as donors who make their sperm available through the clinic. If necessary, we will provide you with more information on the course of affairs when you visit us for an intake interview.
The Artificial Insemination (Donor Information) Act
The registration of donor information has been regulated by law since May 2002. We are obliged to submit the name, date of birth and address of the woman who has become pregnant, along with data on the donor in question, to Stichting Registratie Donorgegevens (Donor Information Registration Foundation). In principle, donors must be prepared to reveal their identity if the child inquires about it, provided the child has reached the age of 16.
Once the child is born, you can request information from us on the physical characteristics of the donor. If necessary, the donor’s medical information can be issued at the request of a general practitioner. Only the child himself/herself can request information on the donor once he/she has reached the age of 16. When a child makes such a request, a donor can nevertheless make a reasoned objection. In that case, the ultimate decision, whether or not to release the donor’s identity will be made by the court.
Important
The donor cannot be regarded as the father of the child (although he is the biological father). No financial or social claims can be made against the donor. Furthermore, the donor cannot in any way claim paternity of a child fathered by means of artificial insemination with his sperm.
